FTE Calculators

Table of Contents

These calculators are just one way to estimate how many Full-Time Equivalents (FTEs) you might need for anesthesia coverage. Think of them as a helpful starting point rather than the “one right answer.” Different hospitals and practices use different methods based on things like case types, operating room hours, staffing models, and local policies. For the clearest picture, we recommend using these results alongside other approaches that fit your specific situation.

FTE Calculator for Number of Hours

FTE Requirement Calculator

What is a Clinical FTE?
A Clinical Full-Time Equivalent (cFTE) represents the actual number of clinical hours a full-time staff member is expected to work per year after subtracting:
– Paid Time Off (PTO) • Holidays • CME • Any administrative/non-clinical time (if excluded)

Example: Full time = 40 hrs/week × 52 = 2080 hrs/year.
PTO & holidays = 6 weeks → 6 × 40 = 240 hrs → cFTE = 2080 − 240 = 1840 hrs/year.

OR-Based FTE Calculator

How this is calculated
(# of ORs × hours/day × days/week × weeks/year) ÷ Clinical FTE hours

What is a Clinical FTE?
The annual clinical hours a full‑time provider is expected to work after subtracting PTO, holidays, CME, and any non‑clinical time. Example: 40 hrs/week × 52 = 2080 hrs; minus 6 weeks (240 hrs) ⇒ cFTE = 1840 hrs/year.

Shift Based FTE Calculator

Shift-Based FTE Calculator

Shift Type Shift Length (hrs) # of Shifts per Day # of Days per Week # of Weeks per Year
How this is calculated
For each row: (Shifts per Day × Shift Length × Days/Week × Weeks/Year) gives annual hours. Sum all rows and divide by Clinical FTE hours:
Total FTEs = Σ(Shifts/day × Hours × Days/week × Weeks/year) ÷ cFTE hours.

What is a Clinical FTE?

How it works
Full‑Time: Total PTO hours = FT Staff × FT PTO Weeks × 40 → Weekly off capacity = PTO hours ÷ 52 ÷ 40.
Part‑Time (per tier): Annual PTO hours = FTE × FT PTO Weeks × 40 × # of Providers → Sum all tiers → ÷ 52 ÷ 40.
Total: FT off/day + PT off/day ⇒ **Total CRNAs allowed off per day** (rounded).
